Imagine a charming countryside cottage, its character defined by exposed wooden beams, warm red brick in a classic herringbone pattern, and the delicate fragrance of wisteria climbing the walls and balcony. The balcony, a peaceful retreat, perfect for enjoying a morning coffee or watching the sun set over the landscaped garden. This idyllic setting is home to Louise and Kevin.
After an extensive search, they purchased their property in January 2018. At the time, the interior felt dark and outdated, with worn carpets in need of replacement. Working with a limited budget, they initially focused on renovating the interior, opening up the kitchen and dining room to create a brighter, more functional space for their family. Replacing the existing uPVC windows was always part of their vision, but due to cost considerations, they decided to postpone the project for two years. When the time came, they sought the expertise of Alex Hull, Managing Director at Back to Front Exterior Design, to assist on the design detailing, following a recommendation from a friend who worked as an interior designer.

Back to Front Exterior Design
Their home, dating back to the 18th century, was originally two separate houses, one of which was sadly destroyed in a fire in the 1940s. Keen to retain as many original features as possible, Louise and Kevin noticed that some of the windows had timber frames with uPVC inserts. They decided that Bereco timber Flush French Doors and Flush Casement Windows were perfect for the rear and side elevations. Believing that some of original windows were likely metal, Alex suggested replacing the front elevation with bronze windows. These elements were brought together with carefully selected paint colours, ensuring a cohesive and elegant finish throughout the home.
The new timber Flush Casement Windows feature a single horizontal glazing bar, designed with 90 degree hinges to provide both emergency escape access and unobstructed views of the beautifully landscaped garden. The Flush French Doors, each with two horizontal bars, maintain design continuity with the window design while allowing light to flood into the home.
For the ironmongery, they had already chosen antique brass fittings for the kitchen and cabinetry, making Rumbled Brass the perfect match for their timber windows and doors. This finish seamlessly tied together the interior details and complemented the bronze windows. The addition of a Stay Bar on the Flush Casement Windows, paired with a traditional Bulb End Handle, enhanced the authenticity of the design.
For the internal finish they chose Signal White – RAL 9003, which matched the existing woodwork, originally painted in an Albany shade. Externally, they sought a colour that would enhance the natural stonework of the house with a warm feel. Working with Alex and testing various paint samples in different light conditions, they found Farrow & Ball No. 211 Stoney Ground, to be a beautifully soft, timeless shade that complements the home’s historic charm.
Louise & Kevin are especially impressed with the outstanding quality and finish of their Bereco timber windows and doors. After over four years post installation, they were initially concerned about how the south-facing rear of the house would handle prolonged sun exposure. However, the paintwork has remained flawless, showing no signs of blistering or wear. Looking back on their experience, Louise said “the windows look as good as the day they were installed.”
“We had a fantastic experience with Bereco. During the design process we made a number of changes and the quote required updating several times. Nothing was too much trouble the team were incredibly patient and promptly and accurately updated our quote. Our windows and doors arrived on schedule, and when we encountered a minor issue with the seal on one window, it was resolved quickly and without any hassle. We are absolutely delighted with the results they look so much better than the old uPVC windows!”
