Benefits of Side Hung Casement Windows

There are many reasons to choose classic side hung casement windows.

Outward-Opening Design

Side hung casement windows open outward from hinges attached to the top and bottom of the sash, meaning they don't take up any interior space. This makes them ideal for rooms where furniture is placed close to windows, maximising your living space.

Flush or Lipped Sash

Available as flush casements (where the sash sits flush with the frame) or lipped casements (with an overlapping sash for extra weather protection). Both styles suit traditional and contemporary properties.

Built To Last a Lifetime

Engineered laminated timber construction, careful preparation, and factory finishing ensure exceptional durability. With minimal periodic maintenance, our side hung casements will serve your home for over 60 years.

Excellent Security and Safety

Our double-glazed side hung casements achieve U-values from 1.3 W/m²K – 7% better than building regulations – whilst triple glazing reaches 0.8 W/m²K.

    Redwood or hardwood timber windows

All of our side hung casement windows are manufactured using certified sustainably sourced engineered laminated timber. We offer both redwood (Scots Pine) and hardwood (Dark Red Meranti), with both options covered by the same comprehensive 10-year warranty.

When comparing the two, our hardwood has a more open grain structure that creates a textured finish, particularly attractive when stained, whilst redwood offers a finer, more even grain. Both timber species are either FSC® 100% or 100% PEFC certified, engineered for exceptional stability and durability, and built to last over 60 years with minimal maintenance.

    Side Hung Casement Window FAQ's

What are side hung casement windows?

Side hung casement windows are windows with sashes that are hinged at the side and open outward. They’re operated by a handle that controls a multi-point locking system. This classic design has been a feature of British homes for centuries and remains one of the most popular window styles in the UK today.

Is there a difference in weather performance between lipped and flush casement windows?

Flush casement windows have sashes that sit flush with the frame when closed, creating clean, elegant lines ideal for both traditional and contemporary properties. Lipped casement windows (also called storm-proof casements) feature a sash that overlaps the frame, providing additional weather protection. Both styles offer excellent performance, with the choice often coming down to aesthetic preference and property style.

How long do side hung casement windows last?

Our side hung casement windows are built to last over 60 years with proper care. The engineered laminated timber construction, factory finishing, and precision manufacturing ensure exceptional durability. With minimal periodic maintenance – typically repainting every 8-10 years depending on exposure – your windows will serve your home for generations.

Do side hung casement windows open inwards or outwards?

Our side hung casement windows open outward. This design means they don’t take up interior space when open, making them ideal for rooms where furniture is placed near windows. The outward opening also makes them easier to clean from inside and allows them to catch passing breezes for effective ventilation.

Can casement windows be used in conservation areas?

Absolutely. Our Heritage profile flush casement windows are specifically designed for conservation areas and listed buildings. They feature traditional profiles with slimline double glazing that achieves modern U-values of 1.4 W/m²K whilst maintaining a historically appropriate appearance that satisfies conservation requirements.
