Preserving a Victorian Farmhouse

When Elizabeth and her family moved into their Victorian farmhouse, West End Farm, in November 2017, they embarked on a sympathetic renovation that would respect the property’s heritage while improving comfort for modern family life. Throughout their renovation, Elizabeth documented the transformation on Instagram through her account, @westendfarmremodelled, sharing the challenges and rewards of restoring their much-loved family home.

Dating from the mid-1800s, the farmhouse was rich in period character, with many surviving original features, making it important that any new windows respected the proportions and detailing that gave the property its character. Now, eight years after the windows were installed, the project also offers the opportunity to reflect on how they have performed over the long term.

Choosing Authentic Timber Sliding Sash Windows

From the outset, authenticity was essential. Elizabeth wanted replacement windows that would remain sympathetic to the age and charm of the farmhouse while benefiting from the comfort and thermal performance expected of a modern home.

Bereco Contemporary Sliding Sash Windows were chosen, combining traditional styling with modern functionality. Featuring subtle pencil-round mouldings, the windows provide the appearance of classic timber sash windows while enhancing comfort throughout the home.

Attention to Period Details

Particular attention was paid to the finer design details. Each window incorporates a 25mm vertical glazing bar and our distinctive Farnham sash horn, whose slightly softened profile was selected to complement the period character of the property.

Polished Brass ironmongery was specified for the hook lifts, fitch fasteners and angel locks, creating a finish that complements the farmhouse’s Victorian character while adding a touch of elegance.

“It suited the age and style of the farmhouse beautifully and complemented the character of the property perfectly.”

Colour Choices for Today and Tomorrow

Colour selections were equally considered. The windows on the principal elevation were finished in Traffic White (RAL 9016), creating a bright, welcoming appearance while complementing the traditional architecture.

At the rear of the property, one window was specified in a dual-colour finish, combining Traffic White internally with Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016) externally. This reflected Elizabeth’s plans for a future extension incorporating aluminium glazing, helping to create a cohesive appearance across old and new elements of the property.

Eight Years of Performance

What makes this project particularly interesting is the opportunity to assess how the windows have performed over the long term.

Installed in 2018, the front elevation windows have now been in place for over eight years and continue to perform just as well as when they were first installed. Reflecting on their performance, Elizabeth noted: “They have performed exceptionally well. Eight years on, they still look fantastic and we have experienced no issues at all.”

The family has also experienced significant improvements in comfort and energy efficiency, with draughts eliminated and the farmhouse feeling noticeably warmer throughout the year.

The windows have also proven impressively low maintenance. Elizabeth describes them as easy to operate, requiring very little upkeep while retaining their appearance and performance over the years.

A Homeowner’s Verdict

Looking back on the project, Elizabeth remains delighted with her choice of Bereco Windows.

For Elizabeth, the greatest success is the way the windows combine traditional aesthetics with modern performance, a balance that is often difficult to achieve in period properties.

“My favourite aspect is that they provide the appearance and character of high-quality traditional timber sash windows while also delivering the comfort and energy efficiency expected from a modern home improvement. They look entirely in keeping with the farmhouse, which was very important to us.”

Eight years after installation, West End Farm demonstrates the lasting value of well-designed timber windows. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern performance, the windows have helped preserve the farmhouse’s historic character while supporting the comfort and efficiency expected in a modern family home.
