Steph, the creative force behind @thecheshiregreyhome, has built a following of over 300,000 people who are drawn to her beautifully styled interiors, relaxed family moments and thoughtfully composed spaces. Her home feels both aspirational and attainable, a place where everyday life unfolds against a backdrop of calm, intentional design.

At the heart of her home is a light-filled kitchen and family room that opens onto a carefully curated garden. It’s a space that feels effortless, yet behind it lies a journey shaped by planning, patience and purposeful choices.

Steph and her husband Will, began planning their extension in September 2020, with a clear vision from the start: to create an open, welcoming space where cooking, dining and family life could come together. Construction started later that year, and the project evolved alongside the joyful arrival of a new addition to their family.

Despite the challenges brought by Covid, the result, completed around 12 months later, is a warm, connected space filled with natural light, strengthening the link between indoors and out.

Finding the Right Windows

As their extension plans took shape, Steph and Will explored a range of window options, looking for something that would complement both the character of their home and the new extension. Inspiration came via social media, where they discovered Bereco windows featured in a similar renovation project. Drawn to the warmth and enduring appeal of timber, they immediately felt it was the perfect fit for their own home.

Shaping the Design

As with many renovation projects, the design evolved over time rather than being fixed from the outset. What started as an initial idea was gradually adapted as Steph and Will gained a clearer understanding of how they wanted the space to look and feel.

Early plans featured top-hung casement windows with mock sash detailing alongside French Doors with sidelights. As the project progressed, and influenced by inspiration they had seen, they moved towards side-hung casement windows, recreating a style that felt more aligned with their vision, alongside a pair of French doors with sidelights from our Contemporary range. The addition of soft pencil round moulding inside and out, combined with a subtle 16mm cottage bar glazing layout, brought a softer feel that felt better suited to their home.

Opening up the rear of the house was a key priority for Steph. While bifold doors had initially captured her attention, they ultimately chose for a more classic, country-inspired aesthetic, a direction that better reflects the character of their home and the welcoming atmosphere they wanted to create.

Visualising the Outcome

An important part of the journey was being able to picture how everything would come together. Bev, from our estimating team, overlaid the proposed designs onto images of the build, enabling Steph and Will to see how proportions and glazing details would sit within the space. This gave them confidence in their direction and helped bring the final vision into focus.

Attention to Detail

While the overall space is light and airy, it’s the finer details that bring it together. Warm bronze ironmongery, including the Barrington door handle and Bulb End window handle, were carefully selected to complement kitchen finishes, echoing elements such as the bronze tap. These touches introduce contrast and depth without overpowering the scheme, adding richness and a sense of understated luxury.

A Space Designed for Modern Living

Today, the extension is more than just a room, it’s the true heart of the home. From busy family mornings to relaxed evenings and everything in between, it’s a space designed to be lived in and enjoyed.

For Steph and Will, their extension was about more than simply adding space. It was about creating a home that feels just right for the way they live, welcoming and functional.
